Tip #8 | Bottoms up! | 20 days, 20 ways to get fit for spring

Whether working out or recovering from a hangover, you drink water at key moments in your life. And you may not be thinking about it why you’re doing it, but here’s why you should.

Thirst is often confused as hunger. Water mobilizes toxins so they can be excreted from your body. Your blood volume is made mostly of water– if you’re dehydrated your cells and tissues (think muscle and brain) get starved of oxygen and nutrients which means you lose energy and focus.

Aim for about half your body weight in ounces per day. (If you weigh 150 lbs, aim for 75 ounces.)

A quick way to make sure you’re guzzling enough h20 is to check the color of your urine. If it’s yellow, say hello… to your water bottle! It should be almost clear.

I love my celeb nutritionist pal Joy Bauer’s tip to drink 2 glasses of water before each meal–you’re more likely to eat less. Mix it up with seltzer and toss in some fresh or frozen fruit to enhance your sipping pleasure.
