This Bitters & Soda drink (@hellacocktailco) I just discovered is the closest thing to a cocktail and I feel like I need to share it with my fellow mocktail lovers. If you’re into Aperol and Campari, you have to try their ‘Dry’ flavor!

I committed to a dry January this year as a little self experiment. If you know me, you know I rarely indulge in more than 1.5 drinks. But as a creature of habit, I do enjoy my nightly glass of wine. The sad truth is that alcohol does interfere with our sleep - yes, even just one glass. 

I’ll be tracking my sleep during the month to see if I’m able to increase my deep sleep, which averages about 45-60 mins per night. My goal is 75 mins. Deep sleep is so important for not only feeling refreshed but also preventing cognitive decline and dementia. 

Now if I could just get in bed before 11pm 🤔...

Worked out (@daileymethod online), gave myself a pedi and facial, depilled my fav sweaters, finished painting basement doors while listening to audiobook, enjoyed some takeout from @commongrillchelsea (their seafood chowder is my happy place), read some adult fiction, and shopped online (for myself!). 

About to enjoy this fully balanced breakfast and some HOT tea before tackling some CEUs. Thank God for grandparents 🙌.

With Christmas just days away, house renovations and underlying covid angst, I’m feeling overwhelmed. It probably didn’t help that we spontaneously started the day making Christmas cookies. My personality makes me want to push through all the to-do’s, but it always catches up to me, usually in the form of a short temper, shaky hands, shallow breathing, and a frustrated child.

Today, I stopped and returned to my 15 minute meditation practice (check out Ziva meditation!) and I already feel so much more grounded. I plan to hold onto this self care ritual for as long as I can. Let’s all remind each other to take plenty of time outs this holiday season.

One of the things I miss most about California is One of the things I miss most about California is how easy it was to find fresh, delicious, inexpensive produce. 

I can’t tell you how many containers of slimy wilted greens I’ve found in the grocery store! 

Eating greens everyday (and ideally with every meal) is one of my most sacred health habits. They brighten my skin, smooth out my digestion, and help me feel more balanced in my energy and mood.

So when I discovered a vendor selling fresh pea shoots at the Kerrytown Farmers Market in downtown Ann Arbor, I think I got a little too excited 😆.

•3 months ago we fled the fire smoke to join family in MI.
•1 month ago we bought a house in Ann Arbor.
•Today, we’re sledding off our driveway.

There’ve been many sleepless nights, moments of frustration and tears of joy. Leaving California without the chance to say goodbye was brutal. But my heart is bursting with happiness to be settled and closer to family.

This pumpkin spice bread is one of my all time fav This pumpkin spice bread is one of my all time favorite things to bake. It’s made with almond flour, eggs, and very little honey, so it makes a great snack, breakfast side, or even dessert. I love to finish it off with a pat of salted butter and a cup of tea. 

It’s paleo, keto friendly, gluten free, dairy free (minus the pat of butter 😉) and very low sugar. Plus it contains a decent amount of protein so it won’t spike your blood sugar 🙌.

It was nice to get back into the kitchen and luxuriate over slowly roasted butternut squash and meticulously plucked pomegranate arils.

I’m doing a self experiment with a ketogenic diet, since I often use them as a short-term tool with my patients for weight loss, blood sugar imbalances and hormonal issues.
•
I’m also geeking out over this new device that tells me whether or not I’m in ketosis. It’s incredibly insightful and I can see it being such an awesome tool for my patients.
•
Ketogenic diets are high fat, low carb and moderate protein, and they shift your metabolism so you burn fat rather than carbs for energy. There’s a lot of promising research and new ways to do it without the side effects (think less butter, cream and bacon, and more fiber-rich vegetables). It’s even possible to do keto as a vegan!
•
Anyway, this chia pudding is a great low carb, proteins and omega-3 rich meal (or big snack) whether or not you’re aiming to eat that way. 
•
2 Tbsp chia seeds
1/2 c almond milk (unsweetened)
1/2 c canned coconut milk
1/2 tsp vanilla 
1 tsp ground flax seed
1/4 c berries 
10 almonds 
Pinch of sea salt
•
Combine the chia and milks in a jar, shake and place in fridge at least 1 hour. (I do mine overnight). When ready to eat, add the rest of the toppings and enjoy.

I’ve had zero time or energy to devote to cookin I’ve had zero time or energy to devote to cooking this week. Rearranging rooms, building a 3-way bunk (yes that’s an actual thing 😆), setting up desk space for 2 of the 3 to be in Zoom school...

Needless to say, I’m all about the easy meals this week. This pork is SO easy and leaves plenty for leftovers.
•
Dutch Oven Pork 
3-4 lbs pork shoulder
Sea salt & pepper
Avocado oil
•
Preheat oven to 500F. Add a swirl of avocado oil to a Dutch oven pan. Place pork shoulder in pan and generously season with salt and pepper. Roast 15 mins with the lid off. 
•
Then, carefully remove pan. Add 1 cup water, place the lid on the pan and return to oven. Lower heat to 300 and roast 3-4 hours. Water will cook off, but the pork will cook it it’s own fat. It should be tender and juicy. 
•
I like to serve it over a salad with a side of cauliflower rice.
